How to setup HP LaserJet Pro M428fdw : In this guide, we will show you how to set up HP LaserJet Pro M428fdw in quick and simple steps. Follow the guide carefully to install the printer properly and connect it to your computer and network.
To set up the HP LaserJet Pro M428fdw for the first time, you have to remove the printer and all the accessories from the packaging box, load a convenient paper stack into the input tray, connect the power cable, configure control panel preferences and then download and install the driver and software for the LaserJet printer.
Step 1: Unbox the printer
The contents in the packaging box of the printer may vary depending on the country/region. Please refer to the packaging for the list of items shipped in the box.
Note: The toner cartridge comes installed in your printer. During the setup process, you do not need to remove the toner cartridge from the printer.
- Open the box and take out the printer from the box.
- Remove all the packaging tapes and materials from the outer body of the printer. After this step, remove the thin film covering the control panel of the printer.
- Recycle the packaging materials.
Step 2: Load plain paper stack in the primary input tray of the printer
- Push the main input tray door downwards to lower it, and then slide out the guides that define the paper width as far to the extremes as possible.
- Load up to 250 sheets of paper in a stack format with the print side facing upwards and the top edge of the paper stack facing towards the printer. If you are loading a pre-punched paper stack, make sure that the punch holes align with the left side of the paper tray.
- Now slide in the paper guides until they gently touch the edge of the paper stack. Do not slide in the guides too tightly to the paper stack.
- Press down the output bin extension to open the extension, and then lower the extender of the output bin.
- If you have loaded A4 or U.S. letter-size paper, close the main input tray door.
- If you have loaded the U.S. legal-size or larger format of the paper, do not close the main input tray door.
Note: Before issuing a printing order to the printer, make sure to select the correct paper size and paper type settings from the computer’s control panel.
Step 3: Connect the power cord and turn on the printer
- Take out the power cord of the printer from the packaging box.
- Connect one end of the power cord to the rear end of the printer and the other end of the power cord to an electrical outlet.
- Power on the printer. The printer will now initialize and calibrate itself.
- Please wait until the printer is idle and silent before proceeding further.
Step 4: Setting the preferences
Touch panel instructions:
- On the control panel of the printer, touch to select your desired language. Then touch Yes to confirm what you select.
- Using touch controls, select your specific country or region, and then touch Yes to confirm the selection.
- Scroll across the display to choose the month, day and year. Then select
- Set the month, day and year and then press Yes to confirm the selection.
- In the Default Settings option, select Self-managed or IT-managed. Select Yes to confirm the selection and then

- On the control panel of the printer, press (right arrow) to set your preferred language. Then press OK to confirm what you choose.
- Press the right arrow to choose Yes or Press OK to confirm the selection.
- Press the right arrow to select your country or region. Then press OK to confirm your choice.
- Press the right arrow to choose Yes or Then press OK to confirm your selection.
- Press the right arrow to select either Self-managed or IT-managed or Print Information Sheet. Press OK to confirm your selection.
Once these steps are complete, your HP printer hardware will be set up and you can continue installing the printer software.
Step 5: Install the printer software
- Visit http://123.hp.com/laserjet to download the latest version of the printing software for your printer.
- Download the printer software and then visit the Downloads folder of your browser.
- Double-click on the installer that you just downloaded to open it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer software.
